With Sammy saving his legs (unless needed) and directing from the side, Pete W took charge on pitch, we started well, keeping our shape and made life easy with some quick passing having most of the possession in Basingstoke’s half. A questionable clearance from Jabba saw the ball go backwards and to his shock was given as a short!! but thankfully it was dealt with with ease.
Building from the back we started to apply constant pressure in their D and got our first short, a well worked play and Liam had his first of the day. Two more shorts in close succession gave us a 3-0 lead with another from Liam and one from Pete. Morrow senior who had been ill all week kept the intensity going and a great ball from Dan Whitcher into the D helped Liam get his 3rd of the day.
Possibly due to a bit of complacency we slowed down just before halftime and Basingstoke managed to get one back.
HT 4-1 to Pumas
Second half and Basingstoke needing goals changed their tactics and left players high, which stretched our midfield and defense, this caused our shape to change and lead to some very tired legs. Sammy made an appearance in the last 20 mins and tried to settle us down. With some great interceptions from the defense late on we managed to keep the score to 4-1.
A great shift from everyone and an enjoyable game.
DoD - Xander for not having anywhere near his impact on the game compared to his recent games - (Once you set a high bar you've got to then get consistency I suppose)
MoM - Rob Dowdell for his work rate & passing (Would of been Liam for his hat trick if he'd come back for teas instead of shooting off to go & watch the Pompey game.)
