On the notoriously bouncy Burnaby Road pitch the team were given very strict instructions by stand-in skipper, Pete Rayner, to push the ball as much as possible. With Karl Young and Mark Wheeler in the middle of the park acting as pivots, Portsmouth were able to dominate the majority of the game.
Starting strongly were the new forward pairing of Tim Schofield and debutant Richard Higginson linking up well with the midfield and they terrorised the Havant defence all afternoon, even scoring from short corners! Schofield and Higginson scored 2 goals apiece.
Rotation of players' positions caused by substitutions worked well with "young" Pete Wingate taking his turn up front and showing his deadly finishing skills twice in the second half. Mark Wheeler completed the scoring with a fine strike - maintaining his goal a game record.
No clean sheet unfortunately as Havant scored a consolation goal from an unintentionally deflected short corner late in the game.
