The Vets travelled to Woking for a tough encounter in their first league game and came away with a credible draw.

Several regulars were unavailable so that meant a few players having to play in positions they are unaccustomed to. Mark Wilson and Nev Chamberlain formed a very solid partnership in the centre of the defence and limited Woking to only three shots from open play. Colin Falla made his playing debut and was able to use the skills he's learnt from walking hockey to good effect.

Portsmouth controlled the majority of the first half with measured passes but the forwards were unable to convert the chances created. Short corners need a drastic rethink! Early in the second half Woking scored a scrappy goal to open the scoring. This meant Portsmouth had go more direct and Pete Rayner soon set up Tim Schofield for the equaliser.

A couple of minutes later Schofield turned provider for the on rushing Mark Wheeler to smash it home. Could we keep the upper hand for the remaining 25 minutes? Not quite; Woking scored with a hugely deflected short corner with two minutes remaining.

A promising start to the league.

MOM, Mark Wilson - Great defending and good, solid creative distribution.
DOD, Pete Rayner - For saying "3 cheers for Guildford" at the end of the game.
