A depleted Portsmouth Men’s 5s travelled away to Chichester with just 11 players available, which resulted in a bold move that would either prove inspired or completely ridiculous. John Arnell — normally found between the defending goalposts — was deployed up front. As it turned out, it was a decision that would rather spectacularly pay off.

Portsmouth started brightly and opened the scoring after just eight minutes. A short corner from John Arnell was deflected into the goal by Tom Hughes to make it 1–0. Five minutes later, Arnell got himself on the scoresheet, before calmly converting a penalty flick on 17 minutes to score his second and to put Portsmouth three goals to the good. The first-half scoring was completed in the 30th minute as Arnell grabbed his hat-trick, sending Portsmouth into the break 4–0 up and leaving everyone wondering whether he should even be a goalkeeper at all.

The second half continued in much the same fashion. Arnell added his fourth of the afternoon on 55 minutes with a fine short-corner drag flick, before Tom Hughes rounded off the scoring three minutes later with a trademark dive at the far post. Six goals, a clean sheet and a full 70 minutes played by every single Portsmouth player — a thoroughly professional performance.
