Portsmouth Mens 3rd team were at home at Admiral Lord Nelson School playing Aldershot and Farnham 3’s in Hampshire Division 5.
In Sunny dry conditions the home side started well but faced an uphill battle against a well organised and physically fit away team.
On the sidelines the home supporters spurred the Portsmouth players on.
After coming on from the bench early in the first half Portsmouth’s Man of the Match Owen Barnes was being tricky and causing trouble for the opposition and the Portsmouth midfielders were pushing to gain the first advantage. Sadly this didn’t work to the Portsmouth advantage and after going close with several spurned chances Portsmouth conceded 2 quick goals towards the end of the first half.
The formation in the first 35 mins had not quite stood up to the test.
Half time 2-0 to Aldershot and Farnham.
Portsmouth learned from this and despite being behind they reorganised and started the second half positively. At half time Captain Alex Love had decided to reorganise the formation to a more conventional 4-4-2. This helped Portsmouth immensely and made the team much more solid. Portsmouth again conceded 2 goals in the second half, unlickly one was scored as injured captain Alex Love left the field and there was some confusion with the substitution, leaving the Portsmouth side without a left back .
Today was a 4-0 loss for Portmouth but much has been learnt about how the 3’s can improve as a squad and the effort and commitment of our players generally.
After recent integration after the merger this squad remains a good group of players with a positive future ahead this season.
