PHC 0 - 0 Haslemere

The Mens 1st team travelled to Haslemere as they looked to continue their good form since promotion last season. The Portsmouth side saw Rob Hunt and Luke Parsons back in the fold both making their debuts for the newly formed club.

The game began with a relative intensity and the Portsmouth side found themselves attempting to explode out of the blocks, presenting their opponents with more space to play with though the midfield than the side would usually allow. Haslemere created attacking chances and were rewarded with a flurry of penalty corners they were unable to convert, Ian Cheshire putting the strikers under early pressure and Chris Bollam clearing two attempts off the line.

Portsmouth continued to attack their opponents but were unable to net despite a few solid chances and a Stu Avery shot from a short corner picked out of the air by a Haslemere defender saw the sides entered the break goalless.

Firm words from Portsmouth coach Chris Wimshurst and a tactical alteration in positions saw the Portsmouth side begin the second half with the intention to fulfil a game plan that had served them well historically. Poor decision making and simple errors saw the Portsmouth side under a period of pressure and constant requests from the Haslemere bench for the issue of cards to which the umpires obliged saw Portsmouth playing out a 15 minute period with only 9 men. Portsmouth responded with a solid defence and despite another flurry of short corners cleared by keeper Chris Ball and post man Pete Hayward Haslemere were unable to make the most of their advantage. The game continued with a high intensity and flaring tempers began to show. Portsmouth were awarded a short corner with just seconds to play before Stu Avery was fouled in the act of shooting in front of the umpire but was left empty handed as the umpire surprisingly ruled against him causing the game to end without a goal.

All in all a sub par performance from the Portsmouth side allowed an average opponent to gain a foothold in the game. However, the defensive strength of the team made them impenetrable despite a 2 man deficit and many short corners to defend.
Man of the match was awarded to Ian Cheshire
