As the two Vets leagues have now combined Portsmouth knew there will be some very tough matches this season and so it proved for their game against a very skilful Winchester side.
With all the regular central defenders missing Tim Schofield and Jamie Moore filled the void and coped admirably. Unfortunately Winchester had very slick short corner routines and most of their goals came from corners.
Despite being four down Portsmouth pulled one back just before the break when Colin Brown released Martin King down the left wing and he sped past the remaining defender and coolly slotted it past the keeper.
Portsmouth started the second half well and it was thoroughly deserved when King scored again, this time his short corner drag flick looped up of the keeper and dropped under the crossbar.
Winchester responded but Portsmouth kept pressing and it was John Arnell who set up John Pratt for his trademark tap in. Winchester managed a couple of quick goals to take an unassailable lead but Portsmouth battled on and Mark Wilson bamboozled the keeper with a fine shot just inside the post. Final score after a great team effort was Portsmouth 4 Winchester 9.
