Portsmouth 4s put on a dominant display in their opening friendly with an impressive 8-1 win over south coast rivals Southampton.

Despite featuring four debut players, and playing a new formation, Portsmouth 4s settled into their new season flow surprisingly quickly, as club tap-in legend Alan 'far post' Duffy swept home a trademark short range goal within the opening minutes.

Southampton responded within minutes though as their one handed wonder Michael Foulds equalised with a breakaway goal to level the scores.

Newcomer Jai Ramchandani impressed in the midfield with a composed performance, and marked his debut early with an impressive strike from the edge of the D to restore the lead.

Stand in captain David 'DJ' Johns doubled the Portsmouth lead soon after, as his pinpoint strike from a surprisingly well executed short corner found the Southampton sideboard.

Portsmouth weren't done for the half as the goal fest continued with debutant Rich Higginson converting well to put the hosts 4-1 up.

Despite the big lead for the hosts, Southampton continued to play well and threaten throughout the first half, and without some vital saves from Rufus Millar in goal, and some stout defending from centre backs Ash 'Hash' Brown and Ali 'Jabba' Thompson, the visitors could easily have reduced the deficit before the break.

Portsmouth started the second half in even better style than the first, with George ' Hurricane' Gale converting in the opening minutes from the floor in a goal mouth scramble, before doubling his tally almost immediately from the edge of the D, helped in part by an unfortunate Southampton defender sweeping the shot into the goal.

After a period of scorching end to end hockey, the goal spree resumed as debutant Nick Harvey also marked his impressive first appearance with a goal of his own to make it 7-1.

The final goal of the game fittingly went to Gale as he completed his hat-trick to turn the screw on Southampton and extend the lead to 8-1.

The final quarter consisted of more end to end hockey, but with players on both sides tiring, nobody was able to affect the scoreline.

Goals: Duffy, Ramchandani, Johns, Higginson, Gale (3), Harvey
